Is it safe for me to sleep after hitting my head?
This afternoon I was outside walking and I slipped and fell on the ice. I fell backwards and landed on my back, but then I hit my head off the ground.
I had a really bad headache. I also felt just a little nauseous. I took some ibuprofen and after a little while the pain went away, but my head occasionally still hurts.
My dad said to test whether or not I have a concussion I should hold a flashlight up to my eyes, and if my pupils get smaller I'm fine. I did that and my pupils did get smaller, so I assume that I don't have a concussion, if that is true.
I heard that after you get a concussion or hit your head or something you shouldn't sleep.
Is it safe for me to sleep or not?
I also didn't lose conciousness, or have any of the other symptoms of a concusion besides a head ache and very very little nueseua. I got up immediately after falling and didn't really feel dizzy at all.
Nausea after a head injury is a sign of concussion but not necessarily a sign of serious injury. If you were not knocked unconscious I would say you're going to be just fine. I would avoid taking something like aspirin or ibuprofen right away however because it has blood thinning effects and can increase bleeding in the head. I sincerely doubt that you have a head bleed going on.
Even with a major concussion the docs will let you sleep. All they want is to have another person there to wake you up every two hours or so to make sure that you aren't developing confusion, blurred vision, numbness or any other symptoms of a major head bleed. In cases where there is no loss of consciousness they rarely request this to be done, in my experience. The pupil response is a test of the function of Cranial Nerve III (Oculomotor nerve). In the event of brain swelling or bleeding withing the brain cavity, pressure increases on this nerve and causes pupils to respond slowly or not at all in severe cases. You'll be fine. Be careful on the ice.
