How can I make a neon lamp flash @ 240 volts?
( I would be happy to use an LED if I knew how to drop the voltage to 2-3 v without a transformer)
I know it's an C-R circuit . I know 1/c*r = sec
I just can't get one to work practically
Has any one got a good circuit, that works for 240 V - AC
The traditional flashing neon circuit consists of a neon bulb in parallel with a capacitor. The parallel combination is fed from a suitable d.c. supply through a series resistor.
It relies on the properties of a neon bulb.
The capacitor slowly charges up through the resistor until the voltage across the capacitor rises above the striking voltage of the neon lamp. The neon lamp then lights, goes low resistance, and discharges the capacitor. The neon then goes out, the capacitor starts to charge up again and the whole process repeats.
The point is that you need a d.c. supply to make it work. A peak-mains-voltage rated diode in series with the charging resistor would be enough if you need to use a.c.
