Why does my Green Laser turn red?
When I point a 532 nanometer Laser Pointer into olive oil, the beam inside turns red. The bubbles are still green. Why does this happen in only olive oil?
I've answered close to 40 of these questions, and this is the first one I've found really interesting - because of its originality. The most likely explanation I can think of is that the effect is florescence. The reason is that red light is of longer wavelength than green, and thus has less energy. The details are as follows: The olive oil absorbs the green light, in doing so certain molecules are excited to an energy level equal to that of a single photon of the green light above the ground state. This state decays to a lower level, probably by giving off heat (infra red radiation) or energy in the form of translational or rotational motion of the molecules (My guess is that the infrared radiation is more likely). Since it still will be a ways above the ground state, the remaining energy would be radiated in the form of a photon of wavelength in the red. Note that the number of red photons created is just equal to he number of green ones absorbed.
