Which Water Purification system is best?
I took a quick look at REI today and the number of options was overwhelming...
Different systems I've seen:
Katadyn Hiker/Hiker Pro
MSR Sweetwater
MSR MIOX
SteriPen
I want something that's portable and reliable above all (while staying in the sub-$100 price range). I'd also like something that doesn't leave a chemical taste, which is why I didn't include chemical tablets as an option.
I want something I can use backpacking, not just Car Camping.
Been backpacking for 20 years or so and I'll tell you what has worked best for me. Most of my trips have been in the Smokies or in that general area and the water is pretty good and generally clean.
Scout troop had a large PUR Explorer purifier that I used some but it did have an after taste. I bought a MSR Min-works filter and used it quite a bit and had no complaints. One reason I liked the Mini-works was that you could clean & disinfect in the field. Most filters required you to run a bleach solution through them every few days. Not so easy to do in the field. If you don't do it though, the filter will clog due to heavy growth of slime or algae inside the filter body. With the MSR you just removed the cartridge and put it in a pan of water. Bring the water to a boil, let it cool and put the filter back together. I have also used the chlorine dioxide tablets. Then I read where it takes 4 hours for it to kill Crypto. Best method would be to use the tablets and wait 30 minutes and then run it through a filter. But I am seriously looking at Steri-pen. Run water through coffee filter to get big stuff and then hit it with the light.
Truth - I've probably boiled over 75% of water I've had in the backcountry. At campsites, I'll probably continue to do so. On the trail I may give the SteriPen a try
