Which line of shimano components would be most suitable for a heavy duty, off road touring bike?
It will have front suspension, will be a Mountain Bike, must be heavy duty. I know that the deore lx line is for trekking, but is it heavy duty enoungh?
Well, since LX is now a trekking group which I wouldn't use for touring you'll need to look into SLX but your question has me a bit confused.
How can one tour offroad? Touring implies long trips and there is only one trail in the US that I know of that has any length to it that may encompass "touring" and that is the Appalachian Trail... and I am not sure you can ride bikes on it.
If you plan on "heavy duty" touring AND front suspension you'll need to take into account your weight and the weight of your cargo to determine the correct spring rate. Adding too much weight will just flatten the springs.
There is a reason that touring bikes are in road format- they are by far more efficient and better balanced, and by far the better bike for the job.
EDIT: Dan, I stand corrected on the "offroad touring", but with regards to LX, it was relegated to a trekking group starting this year and was replaced by SLX. Were it me doing offroad touring I'd probably go for an iMotion/SRAM i-9 internally geared hub. 9 speed and Bulletproof.
